Native American Navajo Rugs & Weavings

1900’s Antique Navajo Rug, Crystal region

Nava-who?

The Navajo tribe is one of the largest Native American tribes in the United States; they are based in nowadays Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah, in the American Southwest. The Navajo are particularly adept at hand-crafting beautiful jewellery but it’s through their weaving prowess that they really stand apart.

Navajo weavers, late 19th century

The art of weaving

The Navajo developed their weaving techniques hundreds of years ago and their work soon became unparalleled in quality, colour patterns and intricate designs. They initially wove medium size pieces (“Chief’s Blankets”) meant only for wearing. In the late nineteenth century, the emergence of the Santa Fe Railroad and the first trading posts facilitated access to a wider variety of dyes and yarns and allowed for commercialisation. The weavings began to sell as floor rugs and saddle blankets as well as decorative wall hangings.

Designs like no others

Native Americans find inspiration from nature and their immediate surroundings. This is why you will often notice complex geometric patterns and vivid colours in the Navajo Rug designs, representing mountain structures, lightning storms, wind paths and all kinds of pictorial motifs. One of the most popular designs is The Dazzler, which almost seems to vibrate of its own volition.

1890’s classic “Ganado Red Dazzler”

Each a rare precious piece of history

Each rug is unique. It was hand-woven on a hand-built traditional wooden loom by its weaver over the course of several months, sometimes a whole year. Only the Navajo women can become weavers and the technique is traditionally passed on from mother to daughter. Each design is truly a work of art, expressing the artistic individuality and skill of its maker. Navajo Rugs are becoming very rare and it is no wonder their value keeps increasing every year. In 2015, Sotherby’s auctioned a lot of old Navajo weavings for over $2M.

Intricate work

A stylish addition to any home

Navajo Rugs look incredible in any setting, be it on your living-room floor, bedroom, hallway or even as a wall tapestry. Their simple yet intricate patterns suddenly breathe life into the room. The infinite range of muted colours, pastels and vivid reds offers a broad palette to choose from and will fit in with traditional wooden floors and furniture just as well as with ├╝ber-modern interiors.

Healing Crystals

What are healing crystals?

Crystals form over the course of millions of years. They’re the result of intricate combinations of heat, pressure, geological composition and cooling speed exerted on minerals deep inside the Earth’s crust. You can find out more detailed technical information on the International Gem Society website at https://www.gemsociety.org/article/gem-formation.

How do crystals heal?

All matter, including the human body and crystals, is composed of atoms which vibrate at various frequencies. Healing crystals tend to vibrate at frequencies that are higher than the human body’s, thus creating a vortex of energy which stimulates, heals and rejuvenates our energy levels. Crystals connect in this way to the human body through energy centres called Chakras.

Chakras?

Chakras were first discovered in India between 1500BC and 500BC. They are wheel-like energy centres aligned along the spine. We have seven main chakras, each with a specific colour and each connected to a specific life area. A crystal will benefit a particular energy centre depending on its colour.

Which crystals do I need?

Choosing a crystal should be an intuitive and almost deliberate decision. In fact, you should let the crystal choose you. As you start building your collection, you will find yourself more and more attuned to your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs.

How do I use my crystals?

There are many ways you can choose to work with your crystals. Firstly, you should always cleanse your newly acquired crystal in order to imbue it with your energy. White Sage is ideal. You can also charge them up with natural sunlight and moonlight. A most instinctive way to connect with your crystal is to hold it in your hand whilst you visualise the outcome you wish for, or even place it on the chakra you wish to heal and rebalance.

How about wearing my crystals?

Wearing your crystal is a great way to stay connected with its energy throughout the day. You may find that crystal rings are best suited to you, or perhaps earrings, bracelets, necklaces or pendants. Pendants can be adjusted so that they hang in direct contact with your preferred chakra, be it throat, heart, solar plexus or even sacral.

Zuni Animal Fetishes and their Spiritual Properties

Firstly, a quick note to get started

This article looks at Zuni Animal Fetishes and their spiritual properties. We have been trading with Zuni artists for nearly 30 years. Our Wilde Ones team has lots of knowledge about Native American artefacts which they love to share. So here we offer a brief but rich overview of Zuni Fetishes. Also, if you have any questions or comments, comment below or contact us here and we’ll get back to you.

A vast array of choice…

Here is a very brief Zuni Fetish history

Zuni artists have been carving Animal Fetishes since ancient times: they believe that each animal fetish is filled with shamanic power specific to its species. To the Native American, animals are great teachers as well as a natural source of power and wisdom.  In fact you can find out more about the history of Zuni Fetishes on the dedicated Wiki page.

But who/what is Zuni?

The Zuni are a tribe of Native Americans that can be tracked back at least 4000 years.  They live in the Zuni river valley in Western New Mexico. In particular, the Zuni tribe are notable for their amazing crafts. They hand-craft jewellery, pottery and trinkets. (You can also buy authentic Zuni crafts from our Zuni store here). Most notably, the Zuni tribe craft Spirit Animal Fetishes, each with their own spiritual properties.

What materials are Zuni Fetishes made of?

Zuni Fetishes are carved out of many different materials, the most popular being Turquoise. For example; the Zuni Fetishes we sell use materials such as Jet, Mother-of-Pearl,  Jade, Catlinite, Malachite and Onyx.  This means they are easy to carve and durable. In fact, Native Americans will carry the Fetish with them as a spirit guide. Hence why they need to handle some wear and tear.

So how do I use a Zuni Fetishes in my life?

Each of us can have one or several spirit animals! In fact we often come across them by chance, repeat encounters and dreams. Also you can use divination tools such as Medicine Cards to guide you. After you have chosen your spirit friend, or rather, once it has chosen you: clean it with sacred herbs such as White Sage or Palo Santo. Then keep it in your home or in a travel pouch, depending on your lifestyle. Besides, Zuni Fetishes do like company so keep adding to your crew!
