This story, written by a lady of the court in the 11th century Heian period, describes the adventures of a Japanese noble during this period of the flourishing of the arts and the development of the olfactory senses. In spritual terms incense was being used for prayer and meditation and on a growing secular level for court games, and the perfuming of rooms and clothes.
